About VET at CVT
In a three-year course, students are trained to be professional people. The practical skills they learn at work in the teaching and the practical courses offered by the school PTC (practical training courses).
As the name suggests, the dual vocational education is a two-tiered training program. CVT Myanmar offers an adapted version of the Swiss model, which has been guaranteeing a high employability and a high quality of skills in Switzerland for over 100 years.
One part takes place in a vocational school, and the other part is an apprenticeship at a company. One day a week the apprentices spend at the CVT school, where they learn about the theoretical knowledge for their specific jobs as well as about general education subjects. Everything they learn corresponds to the National Skills Standards.
They do not acquire only knowledge and practical skills, but also learn “soft skills” like business etiquette, traits such as precision and accuracy, adherence to deadlines and reliability as well as familiarity with the customary forms of communication used in business. These soft skills are nowadays of outmost importance for a future on the labor market and it strengthens their self-confidence.
What they learn at school, they can directly put into practice at the company. The great thing is, that during these three years of apprenticeship, you get certified and nationally recognized training, and at the same time you are already earning money: “Earn while you learn”.
Ideally, the training companies have CVT-certified instructor or In-Company Trainer who know exactly, what the students´ curriculum is. This way, the practical learning process goes along with the theory at school.
In dual vocational education, it is particularly important, that the young people, besides academic knowledge, also gain other, practical and personal skills at the company. Because, as a full-fledged employee, they will later have to manage their own projects within the company, or maybe even in their own company one day.
The curriculum includes both general education as well as job-related subjects. Upon successful completion of the course the learners will receive the in Myanmar already well-known and recognized “Certificate of Professional Capacity” from the state.

Myanmar is the land of teak wood per se. As a result the wood processing industry has always had a great tradition. Since the closure of the Technical High Schools in 1994/95 there has not been a qualified education for woodworkers anymore. A lot of knowledge has been lost since and many companies are having difficulties to employ qualified man power. Often know-how is being passed on within families. “Learning by doing” is the motto. The youth often lack the quality awareness, the use of new techniques and machines and an appropriate general education.

Progress is also evident in Myanmar and in spite of the slow economic situation there is a growing need for products made of metal. Poverty and economical embargos are ever-growing challenges for the metal workers. Basically speaking they have to either make or repair all their machines and appliances themselves, because there are no financial resources to outsource anything. On top of this there is a lack of professional people, because many technical colleges have been closed and as a result a lot of specialists have emigrated. CVT aims to create a basis, by giving an allround education so that the young people can master this situation.

The business of electric installations is not without its risk in an environment with heavy rainfalls and floods.
Secure installations are relatively expensive and are therefore often neglected or omitted. The training is based on passing on knowledge within the “company”. As employment is often short-term, a lot of knowledge and skills are lost. Consequently new technologies are not promoted enough. Only what is known will be passed on.
Commercial assistant training in Myanmar
There is no educational training for commercial students in Myanmar. It is possible to study economics at the university but this is purely theoretical and the young people do not learn anything about organising a secretariat or the administrative side of a business. Nor do they learn how to carry out the daily work professionally or understand the functioning of a firm. If they are then lucky they will manage to get a post in a secretariate or on the administrative side of a firm and grow into their work.

As any expert will tell you Myanmar is still only a tourist destination for insiders. It does however allow you to experience the real Asia. The Hotel trade, therefore, has a great potential for expansion. There is no basic training in this field and only a short introductory course is given. The main aim is to find jobs abroad for those who have taken these short courses. They can however, only be employed as cheap labour and this is not a sustainable arrangement.
